Some tables may include slightly more than 50 retailers where a number of retailers have an equivalent number of closures/openings and a year-in progress table may contain fewer than 50. Total base count: Store counts are for the period closest to the end of the prior calendar year without rolling into the current calendar year. As companies have different fiscal year-ends, store count information for most public retailers in the list above is based on reported counts from either their third or fourth fiscal quarters. Store-count information for private retailers in the list above is based on reported counts from December in the prior year.
